She lets the pondweed caress her fingers
And wonders if she ever loved
Or if she made it all up in her head—
Shy and afraid like the flowers beginning to wilt in her hair
And at her touch—
Shallow and bottomless, both,
Like the water,
Consuming everything out of a hunger for something
She’s sure she cannot name.

She reflects— vacant and undefined—
On the bloody swords she’s seen.
The boys in black speaking
Of rebellion and emotion—
But also disobedience
And irrationality,
The side of the coin they say
Only she owns.

And he can shout all he wants, while her voice
Only floats out like lily-flowers
In pretty poetry
And angry tears that burn in her throat.
He shakes his head knowingly,
She’s sick alright. Poor child.

She can feel now,
The chill of the breeze on the water,
And the heavy, sleepy silt that molds to her palms,

The slipping—

But there is something still—
Just the fear, maybe,
Of the nibbling fish and the groping muck—
The eyes of her brother—
Or something more,
that rises from the mire,
Dries her tears and lifts her up,
Whispering powerful birdsong,
